Scripture Focus: When you enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable (repulsive) practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire [as a sacrifice], one who uses divination and fortune-telling, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a charm or spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or a necromancer [who seeks the dead]. For everyone who does these things is utterly repulsive to the Lord; and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless (complete, perfect) before the Lord your God. – Deuteronomy 18:9-13 AMP

Do we, Christians, pay any attention to these verses? It seems we don’t separate ourselves from these practices. How are we participating? Do you look at your astrology signs, watch TV and movies that focus on ghost hunting, paranormal, witches, vampires and anything else demonic? Do you practice yoga or other meditations where you are trying to unite yourself with a higher power? I believe that Halloween falls right into this as well. God tells us, ¬†we are to be set-apart from the world (Romans 12:2). And what do the unbelievers think of us when we participate in these activities? What do they think when we watch TV and movies that focus on these things? We should really be thinking about it and praying about this!

Let’s look at each one of these practices…

Sacrifice – the offering of animal, plant, or human life or of some material possession to a deity, as in propitiation or homage.

Divination – the practice of attempting to foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge by occult or supernatural means.

Fortune-telling – the act or practice of predicting the future.

Witchcraft – the art or practices of a witch; sorcery; magic.

Omens – anything perceived or happening that is believed to portend a good or evil event or circumstance in the future; portent.

Sorcerer – a person who practices sorcery; black magician; wizard.

Charm – any action supposed to have magical power.

Spell – a word, phrase, or form of words supposed to have magic power; charm; incantation.

Medium – a person through whom the spirits of the dead are alleged to be able to contact the living.

Spiritism (spiritist) – the doctrine or practices of spiritualism.

Necromancer – a method of divination through alleged communication with the dead; black art. Magic in general, especially that practiced by a witch or sorcerer; sorcery; witchcraft; conjuration.

From looking at these definitions, I don’t feel I should have anything to do with anything that promotes these things (even in fun) including Halloween. Halloween is a pagan holiday where the dead are celebrated and feared. And as I look back at these bible verses – I think God takes it seriously and if He does – we should too!
