Think Strong, Not Thin: Part 2

Think Strong, Not Thin: Part 2

This is part 2 of an article on sarcopenia, which is muscle loss (and accompanying bone loss) associated with aging. How do you avoid muscle loss, and how can you regain strength? Part 1 was included in the previous e-newsletter.

“Am I too old? Is it too late?”
No! It is NEVER TOO LATE. Even if you are very frail, you can start small and work on getting stronger. It will take time, but progress is always possible.

Weight Loss

It’s important to see food as fuel that supports your body while still allowing for enjoyment and social interaction.

In our clinic, we may create a specific food plan for you that could involve avoiding certain foods temporarily—or even permanently—depending on your health needs. Some changes will be short-term, but we aim for long-term nutrition plans that are sustainable. Adjustments may be required along the way.

“I miss Chips Ahoy and Doritos, but I don’t miss how I felt while eating those foods.”

Why Is It Hard to Lose Weight (Especially for Women as They Age)?

1. Mindset
  • Many women have negative self-talk, creating a constant stream of negativity that impacts mood and immune function.
  • Depressed moods or anxiety make it harder to work out or engage in health-promoting activities.
  • Send positive messages to yourself and focus on what your body can achieve!
2. Toxins
  • Our bodies are exposed to toxins daily, which may be stored in fat or bones to protect us.
  • During menopause, bone breakdown may release stored toxins.
  • Detoxification is sometimes necessary for fat loss.
3. Nutrition
  • Many people don’t eat enough protein, relying on nutritionally poor convenience foods.
  • Nutritional deficiencies signal the body to hold onto weight.
  • Low protein intake often results in muscle loss instead of fat loss during weight reduction.
4. Gut Health
  • Inflammation, bacterial imbalances, leaky gut, or digestive issues (low stomach acid, low bile, motility problems) can limit nutrient absorption and hinder weight loss.
5. Hormone Imbalance
  • Imbalances in sex, stress, or thyroid hormones can interfere with weight loss efforts.
6. Blocked Detox Pathways
  • The liver, kidneys, skin, lymph system, and digestive tract must function properly for detoxification.
  • If any pathway is blocked, toxins remain in the body.
7. Calorie Intake
  • Injectable weight-loss drugs like Semaglutide and Ozempic reduce calorie intake but have concerning side effects. Weight often returns after stopping the drug.
  • Natural calorie restriction—through proper tracking, fasting, or a high-protein diet—is more sustainable.
  • Many people underestimate their calorie intake. Weighing food is more accurate than relying on package labels, which can be off by up to 20%.
8. Metabolic Dysfunction
  • High insulin levels promote fat storage, making it harder to lose weight.
9. Stress
  • Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, which keeps fat stored, especially around the abdomen.
  • Managing stress is essential for effective weight loss.
10. Exercise
  • High-intensity cardio or long-distance running can increase cortisol levels, preventing weight loss.
  • Instead, focus on:
    • Walking with a weighted vest for longer durations.
    • Strength training with adequate recovery time between sessions.
    • NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis): Staying active throughout the day instead of overexercising.
    • Progressive overload: Gradually lifting heavier weights to improve muscle mass and body composition.

Final Thoughts

Losing weight and building muscle during aging requires addressing multiple factors, from nutrition and toxins to mindset and stress. Sustainable weight loss is possible when you focus on long-term strategies and commit to improving your overall health.
